I would recomend playing Record of Agarest War Zero / Agarest: Generations of War Zero (Steam)It has the 1st game on an abridged way as well as the prequel.
It is a great game, cool attacks, good music, interesting story, funny dialogue & choices.
Ar Tonelico 2 has a much more interesting battle system than 1, you may want to give it a shot, but the cosmospheres are pretty much the same.
For VNs with gameplay, on the lighter side I'd recommend Littlewitch Romanesque, on the heavier side Daibanchou and Sengoku Rance.
In that period, you don't get to be Sega flagship game with five sequel without being good.
Riviera: The Promised Land (PSP) is excellent in this regard.
